Tohoku University located in Sendai, Miyagi in the Tohoku Region, Japan, is a Japanese national university. It is the third oldest Imperial University in Japan and is a member of the National Seven Universities. It is considered as one of the most prestigious universities in Japan, and one of the top fifty universities in the world.

In 2009, Tohoku University had ten colleges within the university, including fifteen departments with graduate students, with a total enrollment of 17,949 students.  The university's three core values are "Research First ",  "Open-Door"  and "Practice-Oriented Research and Education".

International Degree Programs Taught in English
In 2009, Tohoku University was one of 13 universities selected by the Japanese government to lead the internationalisation of higher education in Japan. This venture, known as the Global 30 Project, takes the form of new international degree courses taught wholly in English, at both undergraduate and graduate level. At Tohoku University, this initiative is known as the Future Global Leadership Program (FGL).

Undergraduate Courses
Degrees taught in English at the undergraduate level include the International Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Course (IMAC-U), the Applied Marine Biology Course (AMB), and the Advanced Molecular Chemistry Course (AMC).

Graduate Courses
Courses taught in English at the graduate level include the International Program in Economics and Management (IPEM), the International Graduate Program for Advanced Science (IGPAS), the Network Medicine Course, the Basic Medicine Course, the Interface Oral Health Science Course, the International Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Course (IMAC-G), the International Materials Science and Engineering Course (IMSE), the International Doctoral Program in Engineering, Information Sciences and Environmental Studies, the International Graduate Program in Language Sciences, the International Course of Life Sciences, the Information Technology and Science Course, the International Program for Environmental Sustainability Science (IPESS), and the International Post-Graduate Program in Human Security.

History
The origin of the university was Meirin-yokendo, which was founded as a medical school in Sendai in 1736. It was reorganized a few times. Later it became Sendai Medical College Sendai igaku senmon gakko, this was the forerunner of the medical department of the university.

On June 22, 1907, the university was established under the name Tohoku Imperial University  by the Meiji government as the third Imperial University of Japan, following the Tokyo Imperial University (1877) and the Kyoto Imperial University (1897). From its start, it has advocated "Open-door" policies—it was the first university in Japan to accept female students and foreign students.

In September 1907, it set up the faculty of Agriculture in Sapporo; the Sapporo Agricultural College.

It set up the Science Department in 1911, and the Medical Department (formerly the Sendai Medical College) in 1915. In 1918 it ceded the Faculty of Agriculture to Hokkaido Imperial University. It subsequently launched Faculties of Engineering in 1919, and Law and Literature in 1922.

In 1947 the university assumed its current name, Tohoku University, acquired a new Faculty of Agriculture. In 1949, the Faculty of Law and Literature was split to form new faculties of Law, Literature, and Economics. A Faculty of Education was added in 1949, Dentistry in 1965, and Pharmacy in 1972. Tohoku has been a national university corporation since April 2004.

The University of California, Berkeley is a public research university located in Berkeley, California, United States. The university occupies 1,232 acres on the eastern side of the San Francisco Bay with the central campus resting on 178 acres. Berkeley is the flagship institution of the 10 campus University of California system and one of only two UC campuses operating on a semester calendar, the other being UC Merced.

Established in 1868 as the result of the merger of the private College of California and the public Agricultural, Mining, and Mechanical Arts College in Oakland, Berkeley is the oldest institution in the UC system and offers approximately 350 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in a wide range of disciplines. Berkeley has been charged with providing both "classical" and "practical" education for the state's people. Berkeley co-manages three United States Department of Energy National Laboratories, including the Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy.

Berkeley faculty, alumni, and researchers have won 72 Nobel Prizes (including 28 alumni Nobel laureates), 9 Wolf Prizes, 7 Fields Medals, 15 Turing Awards, 45 MacArthur Fellowships, 20 Academy Awards, and 11 Pulitzer Prizes. To date, UC Berkeley and its researchers are associated with 6 chemical elements of the periodic table and the Berkeley Lab has discovered 16 chemical elements in total – more than any other university in the world. Berkeley is a founding member of the Association of American Universities and continues to have very high research activity with $652.4 million in research and development expenditures in 2009. Berkeley physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer was the scientific director of the Manhattan Project that developed the first atomic bomb in the world, which he personally headquartered at Los Alamos, New Mexico, during World War II. Faculty member Edward Teller was (together with Stanislaw Ulam) the "father of the hydrogen bomb". Known as the California Golden Bears (often shortened to "Cal Bears" or just "Cal"), the athletic teams are members of both the Pacific-12 Conference and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in the NCAA.

In 1866, the land comprising the current Berkeley campus was purchased by the private College of California. Because it lacked sufficient funds to operate, it eventually merged with the state-run Agricultural, Mining, and Mechanical Arts College to form the University of California, the first full-curriculum public university in the state.

Ten faculty members and almost 40 students made up the new University of California when it opened in Oakland in 1869. Andrew Gabrielson was a trustee of the College of California and suggested that the college be named in honor of the Anglo-Irish philosopher George Berkeley. In 1870, Henry Durant, the founder of the College of California, became the first president. With the completion of North and South Halls in 1873, the university relocated to its Berkeley location with 167 male and 222 female students and held its first classes.

Beginning in 1891, Phoebe Apperson Hearst made several large gifts to Berkeley, funding a number of programs and new buildings, and sponsoring, in 1898, an international competition in Antwerp, Belgium, where French architect Émile Bernard submitted the winning design for a campus master plan. In 1905, the University Farm was established near Sacramento, ultimately becoming the University of California, Davis. By the 1920s, the number of campus buildings had grown substantially, and included twenty structures designed by architect John Galen Howard.

Robert Gordon Sproul served as president from 1930 to 1958. By 1942, the American Council on Education ranked UC Berkeley second only to Harvard University in the number of distinguished departments.

During World War II, following Glenn Seaborg's then-secret discovery of plutonium, Ernest Orlando Lawrence's Radiation Laboratory began to contract with the U.S. Army to develop the atomic bomb. UC Berkeley physics professor J. Robert Oppenheimer was named scientific head of the Manhattan Project in 1942. Along with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (formerly the Radiation Lab), Berkeley is now a partner in managing two other labs, Los Alamos National Laboratory (1943) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (1952).

Originally, military training was compulsory for male undergraduates, and Berkeley housed an armory for that purpose. In 1917, Berkeley's ROTC program was established, and its School of Military Aeronautics trained future pilots, including Jimmy Doolittle, who graduated with a B.A. in 1922. Both Robert McNamara and Frederick C. Weyand graduated from UC Berkeley's ROTC program, earning B.A. degrees in 1937 and 1938, respectively. In 1926, future fleet admiral Chester W. Nimitz established the first Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps unit at Berkeley. During World War II, the military increased its presence on campus to recruit more officers, and by 1944, more than 1,000 Berkeley students were enrolled in the V-12 Navy College Training Program and naval training school for diesel engineering. The Board of Regents ended compulsory military training at Berkeley in 1962.

During the McCarthy era in 1949, the Board of Regents adopted an anti-communist loyalty oath. A number of faculty members objected and were dismissed; ten years passed before they were reinstated with back pay.

In 1952, the University of California became an entity separate from the Berkeley campus. Each campus was given relative autonomy and its own Chancellor. Then-president Sproul assumed presidency of the entire University of California system, and Clark Kerr became the first Chancellor of UC Berkeley.

Berkeley gained a reputation for student activism in the 1960s with the Free Speech Movement in 1964, and opposition to the Vietnam War. In the highly publicized People's Park protest in 1969, students and the school conflicted over use of a plot of land; the National Guard was called in and violence erupted. Modern students at Berkeley are less politically active, with a greater percentage of moderates and conservatives. Democrats outnumber Republicans on the faculty by a ratio of 9:1.

Various human and animal rights groups have recently conflicted with Berkeley. Native Americans conflicted with the school over repatriation of remains from the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology. Animal-rights activists have threatened faculty members using animals for research. The school's response to tree sitters protesting construction caused controversy in the local community.

As state funding has declined, Berkeley has turned to private sources: BP donated $500 million to develop biofuels, the Hewlett Foundation gave $113 million to endow 100 faculty chairs, and Dow Chemical gave $10 million to research sustainability. The BP grant has been criticized for diverting food production to fuel production.

The original name University of California was frequently shortened to California or Cal. UC Berkeley's athletic teams date to this time and so are referred to as the California Golden Bears, Cal Bears, or just Cal. Today, University of California refers to a statewide school system. Referring to the University of California, Berkeley as UCB or University of California at Berkeley is discouraged and the domain name is berkeley.edu. Moreover, the term "Cal Berkeley" is not a correct reference to the school, but is occasionally used. Berkeley is unaffiliated with the Berklee College of Music or Berkeley College.

In 1876, former California Governor Leland Stanford purchased 650 acres of Rancho San Francisquito for a country home and began the development of his famous Palo Alto Stock Farm. He later bought adjoining properties totaling more than 8,000 acres.

The little town that was beginning to emerge near the land took the name Palo Alto (tall tree) after a giant California redwood on the bank of San Francisquito Creek. The tree itself is still there and would later become the university's symbol and centerpiece of its official seal.

Leland Stanford, who grew up and studied law in New York, moved West after the gold rush and, like many of his wealthy contemporaries, made his fortune in the railroads. He was a leader of the Republican Party, governor of California and later a U.S. senator. He and Jane had one son, who died of typhoid fever in 1884 when the family was traveling in Italy. Leland Jr. was just 15. Within weeks of his death, the Stanfords decided that, because they no longer could do anything for their own child, "the children of California shall be our children." They quickly set about to find a lasting way to memorialize their beloved son.

The Stanfords considered several possibilities – a university, a technical school, a museum. While on the East Coast, they visited Harvard, MIT, Cornell and Johns Hopkins to seek advice on starting a new university in California. (See note regarding accounts of the Stanfords visit with Harvard President Charles W. Eliot.) Ultimately, they decided to establish two institutions in Leland Junior's name - the University and a museum. From the outset they made some untraditional choices: the university would be coeducational, in a time when most were all-male; non-denominational, when most were associated with a religious organization; and avowedly practical, producing "cultured and useful citizens."

On October 1, 1891, Stanford University opened its doors after six years of planning and building. The prediction of a New York newspaper that Stanford professors would "lecture in marble halls to empty benches" was quickly disproved. The first student body consisted of 555 men and women, and the original faculty of 15 was expanded to 49 for the second year. The university’s first president was David Starr Jordan, a graduate of Cornell, who left his post as president of Indiana University to join the adventure out West.

The Stanfords engaged Frederick Law Olmsted, the famed landscape architect who created New York’s Central Park, to design the physical plan for the university. The collaboration was contentious, but finally resulted in an organization of quadrangles on an east-west axis. Today, as Stanford continues to expand, the university’s architects attempt to respect those original university plans.

The 21st century is being shaped by remarkable advances in knowledge, and there are tremendous opportunities for Stanford to lead the way. At the turn of this century, we recognized that society’s most complex challenges required a multidisciplinary approach, and we leveraged the physical proximity of our schools to encourage greater collaboration across disciplines. Our early multidisciplinary focus stimulated tremendous experimentation and innovation over the past decade and has resulted in leadership in many fields.

The excellence both of students and of faculty has fueled the university’s development. Two Stanford students, senior Mailyn Fidler and doctoral student David Wei Jia, were selected to be 2014 Marshall Scholars and will continue their studies at Oxford. Alumnus Ty McCormick will continue his studies at Queen’s University in Belfast as a Mitchell Scholar. Stanford senior Meredith Wheeler and two recent Stanford alumni, Emma Pierson and Miles Unterreiner, were named U.S. Rhodes Scholars this year, bringing the total number of Stanford Rhodes Scholars to 112.

Outstanding students want to work with the best teachers and mentors, and the Stanford faculty continue to excel. The number of major awards per faculty member has more than doubled over the past 30 years, and 2013 was particularly stellar. Adam Johnson, associate professor of English, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for his novel, The Orphan Master’s Son, and two faculty members — C. Kevin Boyce, associate professor of geological and environmental sciences, and David Lobell, associate professor of environmental Earth system science — were named MacArthur Foundation Fellows.

For the second year in a row, two Stanford professors were awarded Nobel Prizes: Thomas Südhof, professor of molecular and cellular physiology, received the 2013 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine, and a few days later, Michael Levitt, professor of structural biology, won the 2013 Nobel Prize in chemistry.

Südhof, the Avram Goldstein Professor in the School of Medicine, was recognized for fundamental research in how nerve cells in the brain communicate — contributions that have proven to be tremendously important to medicine. Professor Südhof shares the Nobel with two other scientists with Stanford connections: James Rothman, currently at Yale University, is a former Stanford professor of biochemistry, and Randy Schekman, a professor at the University of California-Berkeley, is a Stanford alumnus who earned his doctorate working with the late Arthur Kornberg, 1959 Nobel laureate.

Levitt, the Robert W. and Vivian K. Cahill Professor in Cancer Research in the School of Medicine, a member of the Department of Structural Biology since 1987 and a member of Bio-X with a courtesy appointment in computer science, is a pioneer in computational structural biology. His interdisciplinary research draws upon computer science, physics and biology to help us understand how complex proteins are structured and operate. He shares the Nobel with Arieh Warshel of the University of Southern California, with whom Levitt worked in the 1970s, and Martin Karplus of the University of Strasbourg in France and Harvard University.

These awards, along with many others received by our faculty and students, reflect the strength of the research being done at Stanford and are further proof of the success and impact of collaboration across disciplines.

This year also marked significant anniversaries for several programs that have pioneered new areas of research or challenged us to think differently. In October, we marked the fifth anniversary of the Center for Ocean Solutions, a unique collaboration among Stanford University, the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, focused on understanding and improving the health of our planet’s greatest natural resource. Also, in October, the James H. Clark Center, home to Bio-X, celebrated its 10th anniversary. In its first decade, the Clark Center has become a catalyst for wide-ranging research, engaging more than 600 faculty throughout the university and nurturing transformative work in fields such as optogenetics, bioengineering, microfluidics, neuroscience and computational biology. Also marking its 10th anniversary was the McCoy Family Center for Ethics in Society. The center, with its nationally recognized ethics program, provides leadership in the examination of ethical issues, especially critical given the complexity of today’s challenges.

There were also significant advances in the development of our arts district. The inaugural season of the Bing Concert Hall was a stunning success by any measure. Construction continued on the building that will house the Anderson Collection at Stanford, and we look forward to its grand opening in 2014. In June, we broke ground on the McMurtry Building, new home of the Department of Art and Art History; with its 2015 opening, the initial development of the arts district will be complete.

Continued success requires us to think strategically as we look ahead, and new initiatives were also launched in 2013. In May, we broke ground on the new Stanford Hospital. Stanford Medicine is pioneering discoveries and patient therapies, educating the next generation of clinicians and researchers, and serving the public by providing excellent health care, but it is limited by seriously outmoded facilities. The new hospital will give us the capacity to deliver solutions and define the future of health care in this century.

In September, Stanford University and Stanford Hospital & Clinics announced a three-year partnership with StartX, a nonprofit, student-created incubator for startups. The new Stanford StartX Fund will support an entrepreneurial education program helping students understand the entrepreneurial process and pilot their innovations.

We also moved forward on our enhancements to undergraduate education. Based on recommendations from the 2012 Study of Undergraduate Education at Stanford (SUES), we implemented Ways of Thinking/Ways of Doing courses, a new approach to developing both breadth and depth of knowledge that our students will need in this century. This year, faculty from 69 departments and programs submitted hundreds of different Ways of Thinking/Ways of Doing courses to give undergraduates a wide range of intriguing options that meet the new requirement.

We understand that learning occurs in many environments, and this year we opened a new recreation facility on the west side of campus. In addition to offering a wide range of recreation activities such as rock climbing, basketball and swimming, the facility will include an Outdoor Center with equipment rental and trip planning resources. The rec center will also be the new home of Stanford Cycling, which includes our road and track racing team and mountain bike racing team, as well as support for community cycling.

Our online learning team continued to explore online and blended strategies for courses by working with the faculty to enhance students’ experiences. In April, we collaborated with edX, the nonprofit platform developed by Harvard and MIT, to develop a new open-source platform. OpenEdX was launched this summer, with Stanford offering nine courses, including the Three Books program for incoming freshmen, and numerous other projects are in development.

Stanford’s leadership in these and other fields attracts students from around the world. Over the past decade, we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of highly qualified undergraduate applicants, with more than twice as many applicants as we had in 2000. At the same time our yield — the percentage of students offered admission that choose to come to Stanford — reached a new high of almost 77 percent. As a result, fewer than 6 percent of the 38,828 applicants could be admitted to the Class of 2017.

In addition to turning away many exceptional students, we have seen a shift in campus composition. Thirty years ago, Stanford’s student body was about equally divided between undergraduate and graduate students. But over the decades, that balance has shifted, and today fewer than 45 percent of our students are undergraduates. If postdoctoral students are included, undergraduates drop to 40 percent of the total student population.

Both undergraduate and graduate education fuel the university’s culture of innovation, and this year, we began discussing the possibility of expanding the number of undergraduates to achieve a more historic balance. If we do so, it will be a very gradual adjustment over the next 15-plus years. We believe we have a responsibility and the ability to educate more students and that it is in keeping with the founders’ vision.

A significant contributor to Stanford’s excellence in this and past years has been the tremendous generosity of our friends, alumni, parents and students. Last year, more than 82,000 donors — more than at any other time in the university’s history — invested $931.6 million in the university. Those gifts reflect their deep confidence in our faculty and students and the critical work they are doing to address the challenges of our time.

When Jane and Leland Stanford established the university 128 years ago, they sought “to promote the public welfare by exercising an influence on behalf of humanity and civilization.” Each generation has advanced that mission, and in the coming decades, by thinking strategically and leveraging our strengths, we will discover new opportunities. With the support of alumni and friends, Stanford will continue to flourish and live up to the entrepreneurial spirit of its founders.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a private research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts known traditionally for research and education in the physical sciences and engineering, and more recently in biology, economics, linguistics, and management as well.

Founded in 1861 in response to the increasing industrialization of the United States, the institute used a polytechnic university model and stressed laboratory instruction. MIT's early emphasis on applied technology at the undergraduate and graduate levels led to close cooperation with industry. Curricular reforms under Karl Compton and Vannevar Bush in the 1930s emphasized basic science. MIT was elected to the Association of American Universities in 1934. Researchers worked on computers, radar, and inertial guidance during World War II and the Cold War. Post-war defense research contributed to the rapid expansion of the faculty and campus under James Killian. The current 168-acre (68.0 ha) campus opened in 1916 and extends over 1 mile (1.6 km) along the northern bank of the Charles River basin.

Today, the Institute comprises various academic departments with a strong emphasis on scientific, engineering, and technological education and research. It has five schools and one college, which contain a total of 32 departments. Eighty-one Nobel laureates, 52 National Medal of Science recipients, 45 Rhodes Scholars, and 38 MacArthur Fellows have been affiliated with the university. It is one of the most selective higher learning institutions, and received 18,109 undergraduate applicants for the class of 2016—only admitting 1,620, an acceptance rate of 8.95%.

MIT also has a strong entrepreneurial culture. The aggregated revenues of companies founded by MIT alumni would rank as the eleventh-largest economy in the world.  The "Engineers" sponsor 31 sports, most teams of which compete in the NCAA Division III's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference; the Division I rowing programs compete as part of the EARC and EAWRC.

In 1859, a proposal was submitted to the Massachusetts General Court to use newly filled lands in Back Bay, Boston for a "Conservatory of Art and Science", but the proposal failed. A proposal by William Barton Rogers led to a charter for the incorporation of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, signed by the governor of Massachusetts on April 10, 1861.

Rogers wanted to establish an institution to address rapid scientific and technological advances. He did not wish to found a professional school, but a combination with elements of both professional and liberal education, writing that "The true and only practicable object of a polytechnic school is, as I conceive, the teaching, not of the minute details and manipulations of the arts, which can be done only in the workshop, but the inculcation of those scientific principles which form the basis and explanation of them, and along with this, a full and methodical review of all their leading processes and operations in connection

The University of Michigan was founded in 1817 as one of the first public universities in the nation. It was first established on 1,920 acres of land ceded by the Chippewa, Ottawa, and Potawatomi people “...for a college at Detroit.” The school moved from Detroit to Ann Arbor in 1837, when Ann Arbor was only 13 years old. The city had a booming population of 2,000, a courthouse and jail, a bank, four churches and two mills. It had been established in 1824 by two Easterners, John Allen and Elisha Rumsey. The town was named to honor the wives of the founders, Mary Ann Rumsey and Ann Allen, and the natural arbor created by the massive oaks in the area.

It took four years to build the necessary facilities for the new campus in Ann Arbor. The buildings consisted of four faculty homes and one classroom-dormitory building. (One of the homes is still standing and is now the President’s house.) Cows owned by the faculty grazed over much of campus. As late as 1845 the campus was covered in the summer with a crop of wheat, grown by a janitor as part of his remuneration. Faculty families harvested peaches from the orchard of the old Rumsey farm, and a wooden fence ran along the edge of campus to keep University cows in and city cows out.

In its first year in Ann Arbor, the University had two professors and seven students. There were more Regents (nineteen) than faculty and students combined. The reorganized University did not have a president, but the faculty elected a presiding officer each year from their own ranks.

Freshmen entering in 1841 (women were not admitted to the University until 1870) took admissions examinations in mathematics, geography, Latin, Greek, and other subjects. They also had to furnish “satisfactory testimonials of good moral character.” Students paid an initial admissions fee of ten dollars but no tuition.

In 1866, Twenty-five years after the move to Ann Arbor, the University of Michigan became the largest university in the country, with 1205 enrolled students. In 1867, the enrollment reached an all-time high of 1255 students. At that time, the University was comprised of the Medicine Department, with 525 students; the Law Department, with 395 students; and the Literary Department, with 335 students. There were 33 faculty members.

Today, the University of Michigan remains one of the most distinguished universities in the world and a leader in higher education. It is one of a small number of public institutions consistently ranked among the nation’s best universities, and it regularly is in the top three of the country’s public institutions, with over 51,000 students and 5,600 faculty at three campuses. The University of Michigan boasts of one of the largest health care complexes in the world, the best university library system in the country, and the some of the best computer access for students and faculty of any campus in the world.
